IRRI Librarians at Various Professional Growth Fora

Lea Delos Reyes and Emerald Lansangan, Senior Librarians of IRRI participated at PAARL’s recent Forum on Superior Practices and World Widening Services of Philippine Libraries Dao Diamond Hotel, Tagbilaran City, Bohol on
April 14-16, 2010.

IRRI’s Chief Librarian, Mila M. Ramos, served as resource person on the topic Ethical Standards for Librarians at the Summer Conference on Revitalizing the Librarian's Values Towards Transformation: Leveling- Up Librarians Empowerment for Better Library Management, held on May 19-20 at the University of St. Louis, Tuguegarao City, Cagayan. This professional growth activity was sponsored and organized by the Cagayan and Kalinga Apayao Librarians Association, Inc., headed by its President, Director Michael Pinto.

Mila’s paper tackled the major elements of any profession, which include ethics. This was followed by a review of the philosophy of librarianship and the text of the Code of Ethics for Librarians as embodied in Republic Act 9246, as amended in 2006. Some cases regarding breach of ethics were also presented, ending with the challenge for librarians to carry our their tasks while maintaining the highest standards of ethical behavior.
